Rice’s Institute of Biosciences and Bioengineering is at the intersection of science and engineering and at the nexus of the expanding interface with all things “bio” and the traditional disciplines. Most notably, IBB has served as the catalyst for interaction and interdisciplinary collaboration between faculty members, other Rice institutes, the Gulf Coast Consortia, and the local biotechnology industry.
One of four interdisciplinary institutes in the Wiess School of Natural Sciences, IBB represents a unique educational environment in which to prepare students to meet the complex scientific, technological, and ethical challenges we face as we head into the twenty-first century. Its programs focus on four broad areas: enhancing innovative research across disciplines with seminars, symposia, and seed funding; creating unique educational opportunities for undergraduates and high school students; advancing post-doctoral and graduate student success via training programs, workshops, and other events; and partnering with other institutions and centers, including the Texas Medical Center, Gulf Coast Consortia, and industry.
Founded in 1986 and barely two decades old, IBB has 90 current faculty members from every department in the Wiess School of Natural Sciences and the Brown School of Engineering and includes three laboratories: the John W. Cox Laboratory for Biomedical Engineering, the James and Ella Greenwood Laboratory for Basic Medicine, and the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Laboratory for Biochemical and Genetic Engineering. Its mission is “to promote cross-disciplinary research and education encompassing the biological, chemical, and engineering disciplines.”
