GonnermannHelge Gonnermann, originally from Germany, recently joined the department of Earth Science as an assistant professor. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, in Geodynamic and Physical Volcanology. From 2005-2006 he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University. Before coming to Rice he was a young investigator at the University of Hawaii in the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology.

Gonnerman’s research focuses on volcanology, mantle dynamics, and geological fluid mechanics. His study of fluid processes in the Earth includes subvolcanic magma flow, volatiles in the early Earth and deep Earth, and volatiles in magma.

His research has the potential to predict geological hazards and protect our natural resources. He is currently collaborating with Sujoy Mukhopadhyay at Harvard, Adrian Lenardic here Rice and Michael Manga of UC Berkeley, among others. He chose to come to Rice because of the supportive environment in the Department of Earth Science. He says he is inspired by his colleagues and students and the resources available at the Fondren Library.

When Gonnerman isn’t busy with research or teaching, you might find him surfing.
